La Mesa, San Diego County
La Mesa calls itself the Jewel of the Hills and incorporated in 1912. It sits about nine miles east of downtown San Diego, linked to it by two trolley lines. Lake Murray, a reservoir on the northwest edge of the city, has a paved shoreline path popular with walkers and cyclists, and Mount Helix rises just beyond the eastern city limit.
